Gabe Brown, Walter Jehne & Col Seis in Quirindi

‘Beyond Soil Sustainability Workshop’ – Upper Mooki Landcare

Last week we went to Quirindi & heard from three speakers who are experts in their respective fields. It was great to see so many familiar faces at the event at the sold-out event.

Gabe Brown, a pioneer of soil-health & regenerative farming practices in the US, spoke about how his family integrate livestock, cash crops & multi-species cover crops. They have a focus on keeping living roots in the soil & improving mineral cycling for both production & sustainability benefits. He also talked about recent research around the nutrient density of foods & how it increases when its been produced with healthy soils. We highly recommend Gabe’s book ‘Dirt to Soil’.

Walter Jehne, a leading Australian soil & water climate scientist, spoke about the ‘soil carbon sponge’ & how he is helping to educate policy makers on the important role land managers play in drawing down carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in soils world-wide.

Colin Seis, pasture cropping specialist, spoke about how to start rebuilding ecosystems on your farm. He explained how he has been strategically using less inputs, yet has managed to improve soil health & productivity.

Overall it was a great day. It was amazing to be able to listen to such highly-regarded speakers right on our doorstep. Upper Mooki is thinking about running another, similar event shortly.
